Words Sprung from the Chapter Chair

Spring has sprung into action with spring rain. I hope it brings in a lot of sunshine soon so that I can prepare my home garden.

In the first quarter of 2014 which is also our chapter’s last fiscal quarter, ending on March 31, 2014, we were able to provide our membership with three PD events or 9.5 CPD hours. Among them, on February 1, 2014, Don Nilson gave us 2014 Income Tax Update for the last time after more than 35 years of his services. It was an unexpectedly tearful farewell party for us when he announced his retirement from public speaking. It was a great loss for our chapter. At the end of the event, Don Nilson gave a great philosophical speech for our professional and personal life that was memorable and remarkable. I wish him very well in this new chapter of his life.

We also acknowledge and give our heartfelt thanks to the following insurance topics speakers for providing their free presentations: Renee Penko, Alan Pepper, Lyle MacDougall, Aidan Reid, and Rhona Konnelly.

As we are going to be a big CPABC family soon, we have started to form our new chapter to include members from the three legacy organizations. The bigger family needs bigger venues and better PD topics for our membership. So, we are requesting that our membership give us some suggestions on PD topics, speakers, venues, and so on. We plan to have the following PD events in the second quarter of the year.

  1. The Fundamentals of Social Media (webinar) on April 9, 2014 at Cloverdale Recreation Centre (2 CPD hours);
  2. Spring Student Night on May 23, 2014 at Cloverdale Recreation Centre;
  3. GAAS/GAAP update with Stephen Spector on June 7, 2014 at Newlands Golf and Country Club (NGCC) (5 CPD hours); and
  4. Annual Chapter Event (ACE) on June 19, 2014 at NGCC (1 CPD hour).

Please register for one or more of the events.

I also urge all members to subscribe to our chapter newsletter and the CPABC newsletter to get more information about our activities and events, including free PD events from CPABC.

Thank you.

Surrey Food Bank Wrap-up

On December 20, 2013, 13 members from the Surrey/Langley/North Delta Chapter braced the cold snowy weather to help out at the Surrey Food Bank. Coincidentally, it happened to be the snowiest day of the year! The members all took part in sorting and distributing food to the clients throughout the morning and helped serve hundreds of families. Once again the Food Bank and all the staff were extremely appreciative of our support. Thanks again to those that came out!
