It has been almost six months since I have taken over as Chair of this Chapter on January 1, 2013. I have written up our Chapter’s activities in three stages: past, present and future.
I am privileged to be the Chair with a group of dedicated and responsible Chapter Board volunteers. Even though I have been with the Board since January 2004, I still have much to learn and grow with the Chapter. Even before taking over the Chairmanship, our Chapter had many successes, including, raising over $3,700 for the CGA-BC Educational Foundation with silent auctions in 2012/2013 and many quality PD events.
Our Chapter membership also participated in community volunteering at the Surrey Food Bank (SFB), “Sort-a-Thon” at SFB, Breakfast with the Bank, and the Langley International Festival.
We are constantly trying to improve our services to the membership and offered the following PD events:
* Joint PD event with Association for Operation Management (APICS)
** PD event with Annual Chapter Event (ACE)
Spring Student Night was held on May 3, 2013. We are going to hold the first-ever Annual Chapter Event (ACE), which used to be called the Annual General Meeting, on the June 26, 2013. We are planning the Fall Student Night for September or October and will post information on the Archway once details are finalized. We are also planning three more PD events in the fall.
We have a pool of about 60 CGA volunteers, and in order for us provide a volunteer opportunity to as many as possible, we try to create opportunities with our board and through our Chapter activities. One of them is to limit our board member terms to three 2-year terms, depending on operational needs. We have fifteen positions on the Board, so that we have set-up a selection process in order to recruit the best volunteers. For example, candidates should get involved in our Chapter activities like attending board meetings, participating in community service, attending PD events and helping out at any event when needed. Please contact Allan Wong, our volunteer coordinator to express your interest in volunteering at our Chapter’s activities.
We are always trying to improve our services to the membership and we welcome your input and ideas.
All of us know that the Certified Management Accountants Society of BC (CMA BC) and the Certified General Accountants Association of BC (CGA-BC), and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC (ICABC) have signed an agreement to pursue a merger. The three self-regulated accounting designations will work together to become the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC (CPABC) under the national CPA banner. With the merger, the current structure of our chapters may change and we will keep you updated as information becomes available.
CGA-BC has initiated a project called “Practitioners Group” for CGAs in Public Practice. If you are interested in participating in the group, please contact Monica Neville, CGA of M. Neville & Company at (604) 541 1247 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
In conclusion, I would like to say proudly and gratefully that without the dedication and support of the board volunteers, we could not run our Chapter as effectively and efficiently as we do.
Wishing you all a wonderful summer!
