Quarterly Report from Chapter Chair

Dear Membership:

Hurray! Summer has officially arrived. All of us may be busy with vacation plans, and children at home when they are out of school. I would like to proudly share with our membership that we have raised nearly $3,300 for the CGA-BC Educational Foundation, for the period from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. Students who are in financial need can apply for financial assistance from the Foundation.

We had a Spring Student Night on May 27, 2014. I would personally like to extend my thanks to everyone who attended the event, including students, members, representatives from the CGA/CPA BC Association and the Board. Special thanks go to Stanley Chang, a CGA-BC Board of Governors Member for the updates on the CPA merger, Jerrick Barroso, Coordinator – PEP, CGA-BC, Manpreet Gill from Fortis BC, and Henry Kahng, Coordinator, Practical Experience, and Natalie Makortoff, Coordinator, Student Services, CGA-BC for the update on student services. I also enjoyed delivering the “Strategic Communication” presentation to the membership. The presentation focused on two main issues: how to deliver the message successfully, and how to overcome the fear of public speaking.

We also held an Annual Chapter Event (ACE) on June 19, 2014 with one CPD hour. I would like to give heartfelt thanks to Tom Senft, a CGA-BC Board of Governors Member, for sharing some insights on the new CPA program, and Phillip Ashworth, an associate portfolio manager from Odlum Brown for his presentation on financial investments.

2014 Spring Student Night Wrap-up

On Friday, May 23, 2014, the SLND Chapter hosted their annual Spring Student Night event at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre in Surrey. Participants included students at all levels, new graduates, members, and other guests.

Approximately 70 participants who attended were able to network with members, CGA-BC representatives, Partners in Employment Program (PEP) employer, and other students. Networking also allowed the members to share their experiences and how their CGA designations opened doors along the way.

This evening also featured keynote speakers:

  • Stanley Chang, Governor Liaison of CGA-BC: Update on Merger and CPA Program
  • Jerrick Barroso, Coordinator – PEP, CGA-BC
  • Manpreet Gill, Market Analyst – FortisBC (PEP Employer)
  • Khin Tan, Chapter Chair: Strategic Communication including how to overcome Fear of Public Speaking
  • Henry Kahng, Coordinator, Practical Experience and Natalie Makortoff, Coordinator, Student Advising, CGA-BC: Student Services Update from CGA-BC

The event welcomes all CPA (including CGA, CMA, CA) members and students. Please join us at our upcoming Annual Chapter Event at Newlands in Langley on Thursday, June 19, 2014 and our annual Fall Student Night in Sept/Oct.

CPA Members attend “Breakfast with the Bank” – Supporting Surrey Food Bank

On Friday, May 2, 2014, seven SLND CPA-BC members attended the annual “Breakfast with the Bank” fundraiser for the Surrey Food Bank (SFB). Other participants included politicians, business, and community leaders.

This is an important event for the SFB as funding comes directly from the community. The food bank does not receive any core government funding. Last year the event raised
$104,000 and they hope to raise even more this year.

This year’s event focused on seniors, and the “Senior Depot Program” (SDP), which started last July. Every second Wednesday, the volunteers transform the food bank so that it caters to the seniors needs. The Senior Program offers their clients dignity, by allowing them to choose the foods they want, and provides them with an opportunity to socialize with their peers.

Keynote speakers included volunteers of the SDP: Leslie Eller, Betty Jackson, and Ines Shearing. They shared their rewarding experiences and how volunteering has changed their lives. The audience also watched an inspiring video of “Yvonne’s Story”, a senior struggling to survive and the how the SFB helped her get through the rough times.

Thanks to these CPA-BC members for waking up early and supporting this great program!

Words Sprung from the Chapter Chair

Spring has sprung into action with spring rain. I hope it brings in a lot of sunshine soon so that I can prepare my home garden.

In the first quarter of 2014 which is also our chapter’s last fiscal quarter, ending on March 31, 2014, we were able to provide our membership with three PD events or 9.5 CPD hours. Among them, on February 1, 2014, Don Nilson gave us 2014 Income Tax Update for the last time after more than 35 years of his services. It was an unexpectedly tearful farewell party for us when he announced his retirement from public speaking. It was a great loss for our chapter. At the end of the event, Don Nilson gave a great philosophical speech for our professional and personal life that was memorable and remarkable. I wish him very well in this new chapter of his life.

We also acknowledge and give our heartfelt thanks to the following insurance topics speakers for providing their free presentations: Renee Penko, Alan Pepper, Lyle MacDougall, Aidan Reid, and Rhona Konnelly.

As we are going to be a big CPABC family soon, we have started to form our new chapter to include members from the three legacy organizations. The bigger family needs bigger venues and better PD topics for our membership. So, we are requesting that our membership give us some suggestions on PD topics, speakers, venues, and so on. We plan to have the following PD events in the second quarter of the year.

  1. The Fundamentals of Social Media (webinar) on April 9, 2014 at Cloverdale Recreation Centre (2 CPD hours);
  2. Spring Student Night on May 23, 2014 at Cloverdale Recreation Centre;
  3. GAAS/GAAP update with Stephen Spector on June 7, 2014 at Newlands Golf and Country Club (NGCC) (5 CPD hours); and
  4. Annual Chapter Event (ACE) on June 19, 2014 at NGCC (1 CPD hour).

Please register for one or more of the events.

I also urge all members to subscribe to our chapter newsletter and the CPABC newsletter to get more information about our activities and events, including free PD events from CPABC.

Thank you.
